April 1st  Performance in Truro, the U.K.
A cherry-blossom front comes to Britain, too! Spring has come.

gApril Foolsf Dayh

This is the only day in a year when we are allowed to tell lies. I donft know why this strange custom began. Anyway we like to take advantage of this kind of opportunity. We, all the members focused on a new comer to deceive.

April 2nd  Performance in Cardiff, the U.K.
gMy most attractive feature is teeth!h
We are thankful that the theater has been full day after another.
Wadaiko, the Japanese traditional drums are popular even in the U.K. I hear there are a lot of wadaiko groups here, too. Some people bought five sets of taiko sticks at the selling section in the theater. I wonder how hard their practices are!

April 3rd  Performance in Brecon, Wales
Both Welsh and English are written on the board.

gWalesh

The United Kingdom is made up of four countries, England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Wefve visited three cities in Wales in these three days. I hear that some races and countries were united into the United Kingdom in the long history. It seems that each of their cultures has been inherited.

April 4th  To Southend-on-Sea, England
Do you see our legs are deep in the sand?

gNew Sit-Upsh

We are back in England again. Six-hour-bus drive brought us to c.. the sea! The SEA!
We tried to dash into the sea as soon as we put our bags down! But we didnft reach the water but had our legs caught in the sand while walking. The tide had gone out. Then one of us began sit-ups and the other members followed him. Oh, this is a new way of sit-ups!

April 5th  In Southend-on-Sea, England
We move the big taiko drum carefully, calling out to each other on the slanting
stage.
gThrillingly and Carefullyh

We were more tensed than usual on the stage today. It was because the stage was slanting rather steeply. It sloped down to the front so that every instrument would slide down if we just put it on the stage. We had some trouble even just standing on the stage. We felt dizzy until we got used to it. This kind of stage, often seen in Europe, was originally made for dancing performances to show dancersf foot-steps clearly to audience. While preparing, we made every effort to keep the taiko drums stable on the stage.

April 6th  Performance in Nottingham, England
This is Mr. Tetsuro Okubo opening his mouth wide, a familiar face, isnft it?

gYamato Returns to Nottinghamh

Todayfs venue is in Nottingham.
What caught our eyes first at the entrance of the dressing room was clippings about us on the board. We are drumming the taiko with our mouths wide open in the articles.

April 7th  Second Day in Nottingham, England
A Beat with Main Force
gWe are pumped up, arenft we?h

The members of us go together 24 hours since we are on tour all year around. I could say that it is only in a bathroom that I am away from other members. Today, however, we parted into two groups; one for coverage at the next destination and the other for practice. Some left Nottingham at 10:30 and the other three members practiced very hard without feeling any pressure from senior members. The sweat pouring off them could make a paddle.

April 8th  First Day in Brighton, England
We are reading Japanese comic books (manga), so to speak, our bible.

We always think what we should do to give a good performance. What we believe a good show requires some important points. Other than improvement of drumming skill, unification is more important than anything else in our performance. I think gconversation or communicationh is inevitable to feel united.

April 9th  Final Day in Brighton, England

One of our important jobs is to maintain our instruments such as taiko-stands and stage settings. However we take more time to travel and to prepare during this U.K. tour as we give each performance in a different city. We didnft have enough time to repair settings. Today we donft have to take preparation time, so itfs a good chance to fix some settings. We decided to repair the big folding screen. It was harder than we had expected to renew all the wooden frames of the folding screen.
April 10th  First Day in Canterbury, England

gTo know ourselvesh

Some of you, readers of this report, are taiko drummers and others are not. Then Ifd like to ask taiko drummers if you have seen yourselves in the mirror when you are beating the taiko. Actually, the other day I heard one drummer say that the surfaces of the taiko are like mirrors. Our big taiko is in fact a kind of the Genius for gYamato.h We face the big taiko with our spirits and bodies prepared as fully as possible. We should polish ourselves reflected on its surface.

April 11th  Second Day in Canterbury, England
Which bag of rice tastes better?
gWefve Got the Source of Energy!h

We travel at midnight, prepare early in the morning and give performances at different venues in a row. One of the important things in this tight schedule is a meal. We never fail to make gOnigirih or rice balls before performance. This is how we keep our powers during shows. Therefore it is an important mission for us to get rice even away from Japan.

April 12th Third Day in Canterbury, England
The strings of the taiko were loosen and they seem to be relax.
The last show was over in Canterbury. After clearing up the stage, we breathed a sigh of relief. We had been very busy with the tight schedule, performances for eight straight days. Wefd like to say to the taiko drums, gYou did a good job! Thank you!h Tomorrow is a day for travel and the day after tomorrow is a day off.
April 13th To Aberdeen
Wefve found the gRhubarb.h

gCOOK!h

This is our fourth time to visit this city. Mr. Midori Tamai, Mr. Tetsuro Okubo and Ms. Tomoko Kawauchi, who took part in the last UK tour in 2003, were talking at a super- market.
gThis is the place of gCOOKh, isnft it?h
gThe place of gCOOKh ?h
They are talking about the incident of five years ago. They went shopping at this supermarket five years ago. One of the members noticed unfamiliar food, gRhubarbh
They wondered if that was a fruit or a vegetable and bought some to find the answer.

On getting out of the supermarket, they began to champ the strange food. Then they noticed a gaze from inside the bus which stopped just in front of them. A woman was waving her hand, trying to tell something to them.
gWhat? What is she trying to tell us?h
Ah, the bus began to move slowly! When the bus was about to speed up, she moved her finger on the window.
gCh
„ŸgC?h
gOh
„ŸgO?h
gOh
„ŸgAnother O?h
gKh
„ŸgK?h
gUmmc? COOK?. Oh, she is trying to say, gCOOK! Oh, COOK, COOK!h They shouted at her. Then she nodded with a smile.

gCOOK, COOK!h
gYES, YES!h
It was an incident of only a moment. They communicated with the woman through the word, gCOOKh on the street in Scotland. They had a kind of a sense of solidarity and achievement. They saw the bus going away without saying, gThank you!h
When they remembered the scene, they found she was writing the word in reverse so that they could read easily. The supermarket reminded them of the quick-witted woman.

April 14th Day Off in Aberdeen, Scotland
Rushing into the sea!

gThe Sea!h

Swimming in the cold weather; this habit of ours has become a kind of test of our guts.

April 15th Performance in Aberdeen, Scotland
The driver, Steph is at the center of the picture.

gFinish!h
After the concert we have another work to do. That is loading which is directed by the driver of the trailer truck. We load all the stuff into the trailer. The trailer is full up with all the instruments, stage settings and so on. There is only a little space left in it; just a few centimeters to the trailer door. The loading staff has to stack the luggage neatly into the trailer. Besides they seem to try to do the work as fast as possible every time. The trailer door was closed and we are going to drive for eight hours to the next destination during the night.

April 16th Performance in Salford, England
gA Dawn Flighth
gWhat time on what day is it now?h

Ifd like to talk about our 24 hours of today. We arrived at the hotel at 1:30 a.m. after finishing the concert in Aberdeen. Three hours later we checked out of the hotel and left for Manchester Airport at five a.m. We took an early morning short flight. Then we traveled by bus to the next venue. At ten a.m. we began to carry in our stuff. Then we gave a performance and carried out the stuff. Again we rode on a night bus to the next destination and checked into the hotel. It was one ofclock in the morning.

April 17th Performance in Stoke-on-Trent, England
gMr. Takahiro Mon is shouting.h

gIntensive Practiceh

We slept well enough last night to make up for the lack of sleep the night before last. We are high-spirited today. We have to do everything in a hurry because we need to do preparation, practice and performance on the day of arrival. Itfs a fight against time. We practice intensively in a short time.

April 18th To High Wycombe, England
We are on the fastest roller coaster in Europe. At its front are Mr. Takaoki Masui and Ms. Saori Higashi
gAn Amusement Parkh

c.umm? Where are we? What a surprise! We are in an amusement park! This is famous in Europe for its number of big roller coasters. Our bus driver has stopped the bus here for lunch time break. We are all very excited, riding on some big roller coasters! We gave different shouts from usual ones.

April 19th  Performance in High Wycombe, England
I could eat curry every day.

[Which is No. 1?  Mr. Midori Tamai Version]

gNo. 1h
I can assure that Mr. Midori Tamai is No. 1 curry fan in gYamatoh. We tried gExtremely Hoth curry today. It was extremely hot as its name showed. Mr. Midori Tamai was delighted to eat it while everyone except him shouted, gHoooot!h He said, gItfs profoundly spicy. No one could beat him.

April 19th  Performance in High Wycombe, England
Eating is fighting!

[Which is No. 1?  Mr. Tetsuro Okubo Version]

gNo. 1h
I can assure that Mr. Ttsuro Okubo has No. 1 metabolism in gYamatoh. Taking Indian curry delivery service is a recent fad among us. We tried gExtremely Hoth curry. It was extremely hot as its name showed. Mr. Tetsuro Okubo sweated all over as he was eating the hot curry. He looked as if he was giving out all the water from his body.

April 20th  Performance in Warwick, England
Welcome to the Bull World
gBull Bullh

gRed Bullh is a very strong vitamin drink in Europe. It came from Austria. As we talked about it in our tour report before, we habitually drink it. You might know about it because it has recently been sold at convenience stores in Japan, too. The drink makes us warm up and raises us spiritually. Some people feel it hard to go into sleep after drinking it.

April 21st  Performance in Hull, England
Basic practice; we are singing in chorus to keep rhythm.

gDecided to Appear on TVh

Here is a piece of information. We gYamatoh members are going to appear on BBC music show tomorrow. We are looking forward to it. All we have to do is to give a great performance. We are excited to think that pictures of gYamatoh will be on TV screen all around Britain. We have to mind what we are about. Wefve already started to feel the strain. It makes us feel we need all the more practice.

April 22nd  At the BBC Studio in London, England
This is a picture of us with the members of WAS (NOT WAS).
gHere We Are at BBC!h

Itfs always the case with appearance on TV to repeat rehearsals and to wait for many hours. We entered the studio at 10 a.m. and our performance took place at 8:30 and 10 p.m. After waiting for a long while we performed so vigorously as to show our energy.
Anyway we were tense all day long and. got a great stimulus today.

April 23rd  From London to Northampton
We are strolling around.

gA Strollh

After yesterdayfs strain of TV recording, wefve arrived at Northampton, two-hour bus ride away to the north from London. Itfs very fine, which is unusual in England in this season. We feel refreshed in the sunlight. We went for a stroll at the nearby market after lunch. We just rambled without buying anything. It was a little relaxing time for us.

April 25th  Performance in Norwich, England
gCompetition in real earnest!

gVisitorsh

Today we had three visitors who play the taiko drums here in Norwich. They didnft want to beat the taiko but asked us a lot of questions about the structure of the taiko. It was because they are planning to make Okedo-taiko or a barrel-shaped taiko. We were surprised to hear that they had already made a long-shell taiko. They measured the size of the taiko and the taiko stand and took notes in deatail. We were glad to meet the people who are very interested in the Japanese traditional drums. We feel that we should be as enthusiastic as them.

April 26th  From Norwich to Buxton
At an Indian Restaurant.

gLast Travel on the UK tourh

Itfs time for a spurt at the end of the UK tour!
After tomorrowfs final concert, we are going to leave at 5 on the next morning. Probably we will be too busy to talk. Today in mid-course of the tour in 2008 we had time to talk about and to reflect on what we had been doing these three months. We also talked about the tour which we will resume this summer. Tomorrow we are giving the last performance of the UK tour. Wefd like to put on the best performance tomorrow!

April 27th  Performance in Buxton, England
gNever bump it against the wall!h
gCooperationh

This is the last day on the UK tour. Wefve learned a happening will occur at any time.
The entrance of the lift for instruments was so small that we had trouble carrying in the big taiko drum. We usually placed the taiko sideways on the cart but this time we put it
vertically and managed to push it onto the left. Then we had a hard time carrying it out of the lift as the exit was slightly narrow. It took almost one hour to carry it into the theater. The crew and the drummers thought and thought and managed to do that. We felt that this happening made us stronger in terms of coping with difficulties.

April 28th  The Flight To Japan
At gGongendoh in the evening after taking a bath
gSoon c.h

We successfully finished the last performance but we couldnft feel relieved because we still had a lot to do. On returning to the hotel at midnight we had to pack and had only a little sleep. At 5 a.m. we left for the airport. We took a flight from Manchester Airport via Paris to Japan. It goes without saying that we all slept fast on the airplane.

---Back in Japan----

gHello! We are back!h
Wefve arrived at Asuka in Japan. Now we are at gGongendo,h our home. A zelkova tree standing near our home and carp streamers welcomed us. It is a heartwarming scene that received us. The scenery of Asuka, a typical Japanese mountain village, makes us feel comforable.
